Can someone explain the final scene in Sid and Nancy?
I just got done watching the movie for the first time. I guess I dont understand the last scene. If anyone can clear that up for me it would be great. Thanks.

It’s sort of sentimental…because Alex Cox (writer/director) likes Sid and Nancy so much, he indulges in the idea that they are reunited in heaven. Kind of a stupid ending to a good film.

The soundtrack calls the music behind that scene "Taxi to Heaven"
I think that explains it.

Are there any theological allusions between Dante's Inferno and the movie "Saturday Night Fever"?
Especially the part in the movie where the young seminarian found himself in the middle of an cesspool of sin and depravity that is the disco nightclub. It reminded me of Dante being confronted with the horrors of Hell. Like Dante, the young seminarian was trying to hold on to his values and faith when surrounded by evil.

Beatrice!
Not that I’m aware of.
This scene and Il Inferno are both descent narratives. You’ll find this archetypal plot in every culture and in every medium. Drawing connections is fun, but I don’t think the writers of ‘Saturday Night Fever’ were well versed in Dante.

Help. Baritone in need of good rep?
a little about me

age: 18
current fach: lyric baritone
vocalizing range: Eb2-B4 (high C on a good day)
comfortable range: F2-G4 (I can sing high A’s pretty well if they are in just the right spot)
voice size: HUGE (my neighbors 2 houses away can hear me vocalizing sometimes)
agility: tons, my teacher is a dramatic coloratura soprano and she says I have more natural agility than her.
color: dark for my age, but medium dark by adult standards

weaknesses: I have a nasty break that I’m working hard to get rid of, my timbre sounds kinda weird, I really don’t like my timbre (some people do, but I hate it), if I over sing my lower range it messes up my top range and agility, my dynamic contrast sucks (I cannot sing quietly at all), I have difficulty singing extremely light,

strengths: really big high notes, powerful lower range, effortless coloratura , even trill throughout range, extremely fast triplets, I can sing LIGHT opera; mozart and some rossini are alright, I have tons of squillo (this is kinda weird for someone my age. in choir it’s a a hindrance because if I sing at full volume I cut through the choir like it’s a stick of butter), flawless pitch

PS: Light opera or operetta (preferred), art song, baroque, leider, musical theatre, or pop are all fine
Thank you for your time =)

Why is it considered an insult to say 'black up' (as in Al Jolson doing it for the Jazz singer film?)?
Or ARE black people insulted by this or is it just the ‘politically correct’ stirring things up ?
Would i be insulted if a black person said they were going to ‘white up’ to play a certain role in a film ? - of course not.
Julia.. Dont get your point ?

Tinpanal.. You are 70 and have never heard of the phrase to ‘black up ?’

- hard to believe…

it is just political correctness gone nuts, a perceived insult!

blankity blank | Nov 07, 2009

Up? Thats what i’m talking about
Julia | Nov 07, 2009

I have NEVER HEARD THIS PHRASE.. so I don’t know where you got it. HOWEVER.. at that time in history, WHITE performers appeared in BLACK FACT… with extremely sharp features and a blacker than black appearance than any black person would ever be.. IT WAS A CHARACTERASHUE OF BLACK PEOPLE… and at the time.. IT WAS NORMAL.. so nobody thought anything about it.

The performers would appear all on stage, sitting on boxes and barrels and they would do a variety show with singing and dancing and telling jokes.. ALL DONE IN BLACK FACE and all done in a MOCKING WAY of black traits and mannerisms..

They performed a LOT of songs by STEPHEN FOSTER. Two of the biggest traveling tent shows were MAJOR BOSE and THE TOBY PLAYERS.

I am 70 years old and I can still remember how, as a young child, my parents would take me out to the big red and white tent the traveling MINSTRAL SHOWS would always seem to have.. and watch the show on folding wooden chairs.

Remember, I was 8 years old IN 1948 and we only had radio and movies for entertainment.. so TENT SHOWS and REVIVALS and MINSTRAL SHOWS were a major attraction.. along with the CLYDE BEATY and the COLE BROTHERS circuses.

There were 4 movie shows in town and 2 of them had STAGES for LIVE PRODUCTIONS so a lot of famous entertainers came through for shows

You can’t judge the PAST by the PRESENT. It was a simpler time when everyone wasn’t so up tight about everything.

Does anybody know what the movie was called that Elvis Presley preformed the song OLD SHEP!! Thankyou.?

According to IMDb.com these are the movies and shows with "Old Shep" in the soundtrack:
 http://www.imdb.com/SearchSongs?for=old+ shep&Go.x=15&Go.y=1

This doesn’t mean that it definitely wasn’t in an Elvis Presley movie, but IMDb is usually pretty reliable.

I looked and looked on his soundtrack listing http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000062/
and couldn’t find it in the movies but i ams till looking until then here is something for you

Old Shep
Words & Music by Red Foley
When I was a lad
And old Shep was a pup
Over hills and meadows we’d stray
Just a boy and his dog
We were both full of fun
We grew up together that way

I remember the time at the old swimmin’ hold
When I would have drowned beyond doubt
But old Shep was right there
To the rescue he came
He jumped in and then pulled me out

As the years fast did roll
Old Shep he grew old
His eyes were fast growing dim
And one day the doctor looked at me and said
I can do no more for him Jim

With hands that were trembling
I picked up my gun
And aimed it at Shep’s faithful head
I just couldn’t do it
I wanted to run
I wish they would shoot me instead

He came to my side
And looked up at me
And laid his old head on my knee
I had struck the best friend that a man ever had
I cried so I scarcely could see

Old Shep he has gone
Where the good doggies go
And no more with old Shep will I roam
But if dogs have a heaven
There’s one thing I know
Old Shep has a wonderful home
